What's a Wiki? - Using Wikis and SharePoint

The web is all a buzz with wikis. And if you're anything like me, you're probably left wondering, what a wiki might be. Well, a "wiki" is a collaborative web site or web space where users may login and edit text. One of the internet's most popular wikis is Wikipedia, (http://en.wikipedia.org) a massive online encyclopaedia.

While encyclopaedias are definitely the more common uses for wikis, they've been used for many other subjects, sometimes appearing as a collection of articles pertaining to specific topics, such as software programming. At the heart of the "wiki" is its brevity. Derived from the Hawaiian word that means fast, wikis are all about presenting relevant information in a timely manner.

So what do they have to do with SharePoint users? Well, the latest version of SharePoint Services, allows you to create your own wikis within your working SharePoint portal. You can use them for anything that you might want additional user input for, such as a jargon dictionary for new employees, editing press release or advertising copy materials, as well as a means to keep people posted on progress of a project for a client.

A Wiki can be set up with relative ease in a hosted SharePoint account. Simply follow these steps (keep in mind you will need Site Administrator access in order to accomplish this task).

Click on Site Actions then Create

In the Create page under "Web Pages" click on Sites and Workspaces.

The next page (New SharePoint Site) is pretty straightforward to fill out. Enter the title, description and the URL (you're creating a new site for the Wiki). Under the "Template Selection" section, click on the Collaboration tab template, and select Wiki Site. Continue on the page to select permission and navigation settings.

Once created, SharePoint Services provides a document on getting started with the software. I recommend reading through the information to get the most out of your new Wiki site.
