FTP File Upload Explained - In Plain English!

Does FTP File Upload sound REALLY scary to you? I know it did to me! Until I took the time to learn what it means and how to do it. Then I couldn't believe how EASY it was. Let me explain...

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol - which simply means moving something from YOUR computer to your Hosting Company's server. The Hosting Company can then transfer it unto the World Wide Web - your own computer would not be powerful enough to do that.

VPS

FTP File Upload must be done by using an FTP Client - eg Filezilla. This is simply a Programme that you can download free.

So, what are you waiting for? Go and download Filezilla and I'll wait for you...

Right. You will be asked for the following details:

1. Host: Type in ftp. followed by your domain name without the www.
2. Username: Your Hosting Co. will have provided you with this.
3. Password: Also given to you by your Hosting Co.
4. Port: You don't need to put anything in here.

Click on Quickconnect and you will see the files that make up your Hosting Company appearing on the right hand side of the screen. This side of the screen is called the Remote Browzer because it stores files which are remote ie NOT on your computer.

The left hand side of the screen is the Local Browzer - a mirror image of what IS on your own computer.

Each side of the screen is divided into a top window and a bottom window.

Your Hosting Company usually stores your files in the Public_html folder (or Directory). So, the first thing you need to do is click on the public_html folder in the top window and the contents of the folder will appear in the bottom window.

Now go to the Local Browzer - click on the appropriate folder in the top screen and you will be able to find what you want to upload in the bottom window. Highlight it, right click on your mouse, drag over to the Remote Browzer and drop what you have dragged into the bottom screen (which is the public_html folder).

That's it - you have just uploaded the file!

It wasn't even scary. Why?

Because knowing how to do an FTP File Upload is is a SKILL - and like all skills - it can be learnt. We conquer fear through knowledge.

There are also free text editors out there. All you need to do is go to Google and type "free text editor" into the hunt box and I'm sure you will find one that will do the job.

Once you have your web pages created in your text editor on your computer, one of the easiest ways to get them onto the world wide web is by using the Ftp in the Cpanel control of your hosting account.

Using the Ftp(File replacement Protocal) in your Cpanel control.

Just about all major hosting companies nowadays have Cpanel control. It's an easy to use interface that even the non-techy can use without paying for expensive web developers.

When you sign up for web hosting the firm sends you (via email) your user name and password. Once you log in the Cpanel page is the first page you'll see. Scroll down the page a little bit until you come to the link that says "File Manager." Click that link. A small box will open up with a list of choices. Home Directory, Web Root(public_html), Root ftp directory, Document Root. Pick "Web Root (public_html)". This is the place where you want to put your html files that you've created on your text editor.

Once you're in "Web Root" click the "upload" link at the top of the page. A resource box will open up with a column of Browse buttons. Click the top browse button and all folders on your computer will appear in the next window. Go to the folder where you're retention the text files that you want to load (example: My Documents) click on one file and let it upload. Repeat this process until all the files are uploaded to your server.

Now you have a website.

Important: Make sure you turn the name of the main page of your website to index.html. When you sign up for a hosting inventory you will also generate your own domain name. When someone types in your domain name they will be taken directly to your index.html file which is the main page of your website.
