The two major methodologies of the Six Sigma management strategy for businesses are DMAIC and DMADV. They are the ones used in effectively handling business processes and strategies. They basically work the same way, the only difference would be their individual focus.

DMAIC is an acronym that stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. It is the guideline commonly used in addressing and improving a business process. It usually involves customer relations.

DMADV is an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify. DMADV is also known as the DFSS or the Design For Six Sigma that features the five phases as listed previously. It is a business process included in the Six Sigma principle that is primarily used in making new products, services, and process designs. It involves the creation of a quality product that is inclined to meet the demands of the customers. For a company following the Six Sigma principle, the development of a product means going through the five different phases of DMADV.

But aside from new product creation, DMADV can also be applied to an existing product that needs to be redeveloped or optimized. It is also applicable for an already improved product that still fails meet the Six Sigma levels or the customers' general specifications.

Both DMAIC and DMADV are use for quality improvement, and to minimize the possibility of defect occur. Basically, both of them are common used but DMADV majority is used for design company but DMAIC is use for non-design company.
