FTP File Upload Explained - In Plain English!

Does FTP File Upload sound REALLY scary to you? I know it did to me! Until I took the time to learn what it means and how to do it. Then I couldn't believe how EASY it was. Let me explain...

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol - which simply means moving something from YOUR computer to your Hosting Company's server. The Hosting Company can then transfer it unto the World Wide Web - your own computer would not be powerful enough to do that.

FTP File Upload must be done by using an FTP Client - eg Filezilla. This is simply a Programme that you can download free.

So, what are you waiting for? Go and download Filezilla and I'll wait for you...

Right. You will be asked for the following details:

1. Host: Type in ftp. followed by your domain name without the www.
2. Username: Your Hosting Co. will have provided you with this.
3. Password: Also given to you by your Hosting Co.
4. Port: You don't need to put anything in here.

Click on Quickconnect and you will see the files that make up your Hosting Company appearing on the right hand side of the screen. This side of the screen is called the Remote Browzer because it stores files which are remote ie NOT on your computer.

The left hand side of the screen is the Local Browzer - a mirror image of what IS on your own computer.

Each side of the screen is divided into a top window and a bottom window.

Your Hosting Company usually stores your files in the Public_html folder (or Directory). So, the first thing you need to do is click on the public_html folder in the top window and the contents of the folder will appear in the bottom window.

Now go to the Local Browzer - click on the appropriate folder in the top screen and you will be able to find what you want to upload in the bottom window. Highlight it, right click on your mouse, drag over to the Remote Browzer and drop what you have dragged into the bottom screen (which is the public_html folder).

That's it - you have just uploaded the file!
